Last Friday we decided to go to Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge
in Prairie City as a way to stay cool.
Jeff was gone so driving around in the air conditioning seemed better
than being outside in the 90+ heat. We
of course had to stop at Goldie’s and get a pork tenderloin (voted best in the
state of IA) and ice cream to eat while we drove around the wildlife
center. At the wildlife center they have
roads you can drive on to see the buffalo and elk. One of Grady’s favorite books to read is “The
Gruffalo” so Grady kept thinking we were going to see the Gruffalo and was a
bit scared. Due to some road
construction it was a bit of a chore to get to the buffalo as I got a little
lost on the gravel. But we finally
discovered the buffalo! Not only did we
get to see the herd from a distance, but there was one lone straggler off by
himself. We found him on the ditch on my
left side, then he crossed in front of our car and walked down the middle of
the road for a bit with us following and then he went over to the right side
and was a few feet from Decker’s window.
The boys were so excited!!
Although I think they were a little scared as they got a bit nervous
when I rolled down the window to take pictures!
